Cymbal modifications

Re-hammering, re-lathing, weight reduction, diameter changes, rivets, holes and more extensive restructuring. Every job starts with a conversation about the cymbal, what you want from it, and whether modification is actually the right approach.

What can be changed?

Almost every aspect of a cymbal can be altered to some degree. Work can range from relatively small changes through to a complete overhaul.

PROCESS

A collaborative process

Before accepting any work, I like to talk through the project. Cymbal modification isn't a process of copying another cymbal or working towards an exact predetermined specification. I need to understand what isn't working for you, what you hope to change, and whether my way of working suits the project.

01

As received

Once the cymbal arrives, I make an “As Received” video before carrying out any work. This gives us a reference for exactly how the cymbal sounded and behaved when it reached me.

02

Work, listen, discuss

I make an initial set of changes, then record another demo video so you can hear and see what has changed. We discuss the result before deciding what happens next.

03

Refine

Most projects involve several iterations. The cymbal develops through a conversation rather than being modified once and declared finished.

04

Finished when you're happy

I only regard the job as complete when you're happy with the result. Once payment is settled, the cymbal is sent back to you.

BEFORE YOU MODIFY

Modification isn't always the answer

Changing a cymbal is permanent. It can affect its resale value, and once bronze has been removed, cut or substantially reshaped, there is no way to return it to its original state.

Sometimes the better option is to sell a cymbal that isn't working for you and find one that already does. A cymbal you dislike may be exactly what somebody else is looking for. I'm quite happy to discuss whether or not modification is the sensible route.

Tell me about your cymbal

Every cymbal modification project is different, so the first step is simply to get in touch and tell me what you're working with and what you would like to change.
